Sports salaries are ridiculous, period. $1 million to a guy that waves his arm and tells a guy to run around a base? That's wrong. The Bo-Sox head coach makes $550k a year... That's still a bit much, but reasonable. Joe Torrie (Yankees Head Coach) makes something like 10 or 20 times that much.

Gip, I've noticed a severe reduction in my television watching as a direct result of the NHL's stupidity. The past few years, I've enjoyed watching the Wild so much that as a result I'd tune in for whatever hockey games I could find just to satisfy the fix. Subsequently, I'd also watch basketball games that would be on before/after/during the hockey. Not only that, SportsCenter would be a perpetual presence in my apartment as well. Now, with no hockey, the TV rarely turns on, basketball is completely unappealing, and I haven't watched SportsCenter regularly since, well, last year. Am I going to watch again if/when the NHL comes back? Probably. Will I have as much enthusiasm for it? No. Will I watch as much other TV? I hope not. Stupid hockey.

Joey, as long as humans (don't limit sports salary rants to the US. Soccer players in Europe are as well-paid as any athletes anywhere) enjoy watching sport, sports stars will make a lot of money. Is A-Rod's $20M/year salary outrageous? Absolutely. Would it have been worth it had the Rangers won a World Series? Ask any Rangers fan and I bet the answer would have been "yes." As a Twins fan, it absolutely pisses me off that the Yankees and other large-market teams have such an incredible advantage over smaller spenders, but as a free-market society, it's all a result of the demand of the consumer.
