I love VIM, but not many Unix systems usually have it. I know that pico/nano is always there, so it seems like most of the time those two editors are my choice. Not to start an endless argument about which is better, have you tried emacs? Hehe. ;)

Yeah, I got started on Pico. Nano came on my gentoo box at work.

I tried emacs for a second or two, found it more confusing than vim. But I really like vim. I guess I could check out emacs but since I've found a lot of what I need in vim I guess I'm gonna play the lazy card and say there's little need to.

Personally, my first editor of choice was VI back when Linux was hard to get it to work. Then, I found pico/nano to be more noob friendly, which at that point didn't really matter. I didn't quite get the "emacs" people. People always have an argument about how great emacs is compared to VIM or any others. I just don't quite get it... It feels more like a textwrangler for unix editor. I just feel as though it is too much for just text-based terminal. Of course, we can run the emacs in X window, but what is the point if other great programs that are specifically designed for GTK and KDE is designed
